Bathroom Hijinks

There have been a few times in my life where I have been mistaken as an intelligent individual. Maybe someone sees me reading something that isn’t Hop on Pop (a rare occurrence – I read a lot of Hop on Pop), or maybe I accidently use a large word I heard in a video game.

These two very true stories are to dispel any myths about my intelligence.

Story One: The Toothpaste Incident

Brushing my teeth is something I do on occasion, and this was one of those occasions. While applying the toothpaste to the bristles of the brush, I was inadvertently pressing down a group of bristles with the tube. Moving the tube of toothpaste off of the bristles created a slingshot out of the toothbrush bristles, launching a small glob of toothpaste right in my eye.

Toothpaste in the eye is a painful experience.

Story Two: The Mouthwash Incident

Often after brushing my teeth, I’ll use mouthwash to really rinse the gunk out of my mouth. Since no one else shares my bottle of off-brand mouthwash I decided what the hell, I’ll go ahead and take a glug straight from the bottle. I sealed my lips over the opening, tipped my head back and took a mouthful. Well, my lip seal was too tight, creating a pressurized bottle of mouthwash. Removing my lips released the pressure, and with it a healthy splash mouthwash was projectiled straight up my nostrils. For a second I was worried. This is going to burn, I thought. After waiting a second, green teeth cleaning liquid dripping off my face, I breathed a sigh of relief for the lack of pain I was feeling.

I use a washcloth to clean off my face, when out of nowhere the stinging starts. My nostrils are on fire. At this point I consider suicide, but decide against it because I feel hunger coming on and killing myself on an empty stomach is an unattractive proposition.

salo

So I’ve got a desk in my room, which means that I’ve finally been able to set up my computer. I had been using my tiny netbook, which I love, but having a decently sized screen and fully capable PC at my disposal is something I’ve missed. Aside from being able to play games again, which is awesome, it’s incredibly fantastic to regain access to my 12,613 songs. I’ve even put my library on shuffle – something that I almost never do – just to enjoy having it all back. I’ve forgotten I even owned some of this stuff (if you’re pathetically bored you can go check out exactly what stuff I’ve been listening to).

I’ve read an insane amount of comics since I’ve been here, thanks to the crazy library. Looking over my rental history I’m counting over 30 trade paper backs (or “graphic novels” for the snooty) checked out since I started going. This is fascinating information, I know.

Also, I still write over at n-philes. Check out my review for some firefighter game that was actually pretty fun. If you want.

Getting Settled, Taking Trips.

beach

We’ve moved into our nicer, larger apartment, which has been great so far. I’m still amassing furniture (I don’t have a mattress yet, although I do have a frame for some reason), but it’s coming along. We got some fish, thanks to the internet having places to get random stuff for free.

Nathan paid us a visit these last few days, so we made a trip over to the coast. Checked out the Heceta Head Lighthouse, a trip I can highly recommend thanks to the awesome tour guides. We saw some sea lions chilling out and a whale in the distance blowin’ water all over the place. The high/low point of the trip with the salt water taffy – high point because it was good and low point because I kept eating it. Finally we made our way over to the beach. Climbing to the top of the sand dunes, especially after that salt water taffy, was enough to make me consider suicide. But it was pretty, so I decided against it. As for the water? Balls cold.

I also wrote a new feature for N-Philes about Comics That Don’t Suck, you should read it because you love me.

Thank you, internet.

Last night while avoiding doing anything that might resemble being productive I stumbled on Eversion - a free to download old school style platformer. It came out at the end of last year, but it’s new to me. The looks are cutesy, but we start with a quote from H.P. Lovecraft and a warning that reads “NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN OR THOSE WITH A NERVOUS DISPOSITION.” This is, of course, a joke, but it ends up being a little closer to the truth than I originally thought. Looking at the readme file reveals the story, which is as follows. (No joke.)

princess is kidnapped

you must save princess

Well they get points for being concise, at least.

The rest is over on my n-philes blog, which you should go look at because you love me.

/Cooking, and Even More E3 Junk

games, other writings — Adam @ 11:39 pm on June 14, 2009

The n-philes staff (that includes me) did a write up on what we thought was the best of E3. It’s actually a pretty fun read, I think, so you should stop being dumb and read it.

A while back I started a cooking blog called “/cooking”, cleverly named after the url of http://adamglasgow.com/cooking.  The very perceptive of you might have even noticed a link to it on the right hand side of this page. I never mentioned it here before because frankly I had done almost nothing with it, but today I posted a pretty awesome tasting recipe for spinach and mushroom manicotti and a guest recipe by Steve for fried tofu and stir fry that looks tasty as well. If this keeps up, that blog might actually be worth looking at sometimes. If you’re interested in writing a guest recipe for the site, let me know either by contacting me here, commenting, or getting a hold of me in some other way. I’m sure we can work something out.

The very perceptive of you might also have noticed the new flickr sidebar over there on the bottom right. This will show off the newest uploads to my flickr page, which will usually be my picture of the day, as discussed a few posts down.

Braid

games, other writings — Adam @ 2:23 am on April 18, 2009

This is straight up copy/pasted from my blog over at N-Philes

Braid is not a new game. It was released on the 360 almost a year ago. But it just came out on the PC, which means it’s new to me.

For monetary reasons I’ve chosen to sit most of this generation out. I have a Wii and a PC, but I haven’t been able to force myself to spend the money on a 360 or PS3. Plus, my Wii hasn’t really gotten much play. For the most part I haven’t really felt like I’ve missed much, save for a few shining stars like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet, which I’ve had to weasel my way into friends houses to play.

Quite a few games this generation have begun their lives on consoles I didn’t have and drug their feet onto the PC. Which makes me happy not because I’m a PC snob, but because I actually own a PC. Well, Braid finally made its way onto Steam. My review can be summarized in three words.

Buy. This. Game.

It’s beautiful, especially if you’re a sucker for sprites like I am. The music is fantastic, the level design is great and the time shift puzzles are a blast to figure out. I’m not done playing it yet, but I feel pretty confident saying that it’s one of the best games in the last few years.

Buy it on the 360 or buy it on the PC. It’s even out on Mac, I think. Just do yourself a favor and buy the damn game.

My review for Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People finally went up over at N-Philes, as well as a little blog entry on some bullet hell style shooters for the PC.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bullet hell,” this video sums it up pretty well I think.

Comics That Don’t Suck With Tim Sievert (N-Philes)

Interviews, books & comics, other writings — Adam @ 1:46 pm on March 5, 2009

I did a nice little interview with Tim Sievert (That Salty Air) for N-philes.

Is it pretentious to quote myself?

Let’s be honest: most comics suck. But so do most movies, games, TV shows, and so does most music. But with these mediums most people seem to think themselves pretty good at weeding through the trash to find the morsels of goodness. Why is it, then, that more people don’t sort through the horrible comics and find the good ones? Sure, every once in a while the mainstream will notice something likeWatchmen or Maus, but many great comics fly well under the radar. With Comics That Don’t Suck, which will be an ongoing feature here at N-philes, I hope to bring some attention to comics that you probably wouldn’t have known about otherwise. If you never read comics maybe something will catch your eye and you’ll pick one up. If you already love comics, hopefully I’ll show you something new. For the very first CTDS I’m talking about Tim Sievert’s first published comic: That Salty Air. I also had the chance to talk with Sievert about his book (among other things).

the rest…
