Giving him a real reason to want to escape doesn't take away from the idea that a child's imagination is a place to escape the real world. In most cases stories and characters have to be stripped down to fit into the confines of a two hour movie. In this case they'll need to be embellished more, and if that means giving him a real reason to want to get out of the real world then I have no problem with it. As long as it's done right.
